Description
An uncoloured set numbered '127' (on the printed label on the inside panel the solander box) of an edition limited to 150 sets printed from the original woodblocks on a Columbian hand-press by John and Rosalind Randle and Miriam Mcgregor, of which 12 were coloured. The paper is Camber Sand hand-made from Hayle Mill and the solander boxes were made by Weatherby Woolnough. Each box contains (a) 26 sheets, each 390 x 285 mm, and each illustrating one letter of the alphabet; (b) an extra sheet, each 390 x 285 mm, for each of the letters 'E' and 'T' illustrated with Earl, Executioner, Trumpeter and Topers respectively; (c) seven sheets of unused illustrations, each 390 x 285 mm, namely 'J' for Jockey, 'L' for Lady, 'Q' for Quakeress, 'S' for Sportsman (two copies), 'U' for Usher and 'Z' for Zoologist (d) a title sheet and spare spine label; (e) a copy of Edward Craig's book 'William Nicholson's An Alphabet. An introduction to the reprint from the original woodblocks', also numbered '127' and signed by the author, being one of a total edition of 300 copies set in Caslon type and printed on quarto Rives mould-made paper, together with a prospectus with photograph illustrations; (f) a spare copy of the woodblock print affixed to the upper panel of the solander box; (g) an order form for 'An Almanac of Twelve Sports' & 'London Types'. The cloth covered solander box measures 440 x 320 mm.
